NKP 765 Runby At 70 MPH!

They don’t call it the Joliet Rocket for nothing!

The historic Nickel Plate Road Railroad at one time had 80 of these powerful locomotives which were supplied by both the American Locomotive Works and the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941 through 1944.

Called “Super-power” locomotives, they provided fast freight and passenger service on the Nickel Plate Railroad which stretched from Chicago, Illinois, to Buffalo, New York.

NKP 765 highballs through Tinley Park Station, Illinois, with railfans standing a little too close for comfort!

Quick facts about the Nickel Plate Road #765 Berkshire Class Locomotives

  • Builders: Lima and American Locomotive Works 1941-1944
  • Wheel arrangement: 2-8-4
  • Driver diameters: 69 inches
  • Locomotive and tender weight: 802,500 lbs

Let us know if you have ever ridden an excursion behind this classic locomotive! We would love to hear about your experience!

Photo – Kalel Harrison shot Yesterday’s Sumas Turn returning back from Huntington, BC on CP’s Mission Subdivision. It was interesting to see 4 units running on the train due to the freight only usually needing 2 units. Power was CP SD60M 6258, CP SD30C-ECO 5010, CP GP38-2 3085, and former D&H GP38-2 7310 in “dual flags”. www.canadianrailwayobservations.com
